From its earliest days on the streets of Cove City, Bryant Chapel AME Zion Church has stood as a pillar of worship, leadership, and community care. Through decades of change, our congregation has remained rooted in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion tradition — a tradition of freedom, justice, and fervent faith.

A faithful beginning that became Bryant Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

The Founding Era
Roots of Faith in Cove City
Bryant Chapel AME Zion Church was established in the spirit of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion movement — a denomination born out of the struggle for freedom and the desire for self-determination. Our founders gathered in faith, planting seeds of worship and community that would grow for generations.
Growing Strong in Zion
As the new century dawned, Bryant Chapel grew in membership and influence. The congregation deepened its commitment to education, spiritual development, and community care — hallmarks of the AME Zion tradition that traces its lineage to freedom fighters and abolitionists.
Early 1900s
Mid-century
A Pillar Through Change
Through the Civil Rights Movement and the social upheavals of the mid-20th century, Bryant Chapel stood as a place of refuge, mobilization, and hope. The church’s ministry expanded to meet the needs of a changing community, living out the AME Zion motto: “Freedom Church.”
Strengthening the Foundation
Decades of faithful leadership, pastoral vision, and dedicated laity built the institutional strength of Bryant Chapel. Ministries multiplied, facilities were improved, and the congregation’s ties to the Yadkin Valley Episcopal District of the AME Zion Church deepened.

Today, Bryant Chapel AME Zion Church continues its mission at 506 N. Main St., Cove City, NC — a beacon of Zion faith in Craven County. We honor those who came before us by pressing forward: worshipping boldly, serving sacrificially, and welcoming all who seek the presence of God.
